Both teams came out knowing they had to play for a win to advance in the winners bracket of the tournament. The pace was quick from the jump with Jarrett getting a four point lead early and the Cougars fighting back for a 7-7 tie at the end of the first. Team defense and good ball movement at the offensive end allowed Carver to get a little bit of control heading into the half with a 21-16 lead. Several cougars were in foul trouble in the first half so teammates Nicholas Cole and Noah Tews stepped in the game to contribute and that trend would continue for the rest of the game. The Carver team knew that Jarrett would not give up and were prepared for the charge that came late in the game and allowed the Trojans to get within six points. Niekie Thomas and Nathan Townsen were able to run the offense and hand out four assists each while Hayden Schmitz, Michael Fowler, Merrick Altis and Seth Holyfield worked hard to reverse the ball and get open shots. After hitting three three-pointers in a row the Cougars were able to contain Jarrett for the remainder of the game and came away with the 46-29 win. Leading scorers were Nathan Townsen and Niekie Thomas with eleven points each and Michael Fowler with nine. Merrick Altis had a team high four offensive rebounds and the defense was led by Seth Holyfield getting four steals. <br /> The 7th grade team will play at 3:00 Thursday at Carver with the opponent to be announced Thursday at lunch. The B team defense jumped on Pershing from the get go and with Darnell Parker and Chaviz Nguyen combining for six steals the Cougars were up 12-5 at the half. Jordan Bollenbach and Darnell Parker led the team with six offensive rebounds each while Andrew Langley had three assists. The Generals came out strong in the third and took a 21-15 lead and from then on it was a great battle with every Cougar grabbing at least one rebound in an effort to get back in front. Despite great team effort from Elvis Edwards, Shannon Ryan and Shamar Redix and incredible defensive effort from Noah Tews Carver just could not make up the points and fell 33-27. Coltin Smith and Jordan Bollenbach were leading scorers for the Cougars.<br />The stage was set for a great performance from the A teams of both schools. Carver was determined to avenge an earlier loss to Pershing and it showed with the effort in the first half by Michael Fowler who wound up pulling in eight defensive rebounds and Merrick Altis who had four. The Cougars were down 10-7 at the end of the first quarter but pulled even at the half 17-17 with great effort from the entire team. The third quarter was very intense when Coltin Smith came in and played incredible defense on the Pershing big men while Nathan Townsen, Seth Holyfield and Niekie Thomas contained the other players outside. The game was tied 33-33 when Hayden Schmitz was fouled with 1.6 seconds left. With ice in his veins Hayden drained all three to give Carver a three point lead and after Pershing missed a free throw at the other end the Cougars were celebrating the 36-33 win.<br /> <br /> B team stats<br />Bollenbach 11 pts., 6 offensive rebounds, 2 assists, 2 defensive rebounds, 2 steals<br />Cole 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound <br />Edwards 1 offensive rebound, 1 assits, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal<br />Langley 1 offensive rebound, 3 assists, 1 defensive rebound<br />Nguyen 2 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist,1 defensive rebound, 3 steals <br />Parker 6 offensive rebounds, 2 assists, 2 defensive rebounds, 3 steal<br />Redix 4 pts., 1 assist, 1 defensive rebound,1 steal <br />Ryan 4 pts., 1 assist,1 defensive rebound<br />Smith 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal <br />Tews 6 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound, 2 steal<br /> A team stats <br />ALtis 2 offensive rebounds, 3 assists, 4 defensive rebounds, 1 steal<br />Cole 1 offensive rebound<br />Fowler 5 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 4 assists, 8 defensive rebounds, 1 steal<br />Holyfield 2 pts., 3 offensive reobunds, 1 assist, 1 defnsive rebound, 1 steal<br />Schmitz 7 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 3 assists, 3 defensive rebbounds, 3 steals<br />Thomas 4 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist, 2 defensive rebounds, 2 steals<br />Townsen 14 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists, 2 defensive rebounds, 3 stealsCoach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-73785090376667455392010-12-14T08:05:00.000-08:002010-12-14T13:47:28.706-08:00Game 7 vs. Reed<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdeonafXdZJq0ix7M2-nnLH8JNPihc97LciMfVedK5iMeHF-ZEYZFNkhrF6cve7iHETtwjyM-REHsEw28oME9vfmF9GrTcwkVRW99MLlOjcEgGMmFrJnqkUt-nYYO83I-FB1sgOovC5FQp/s1600/cougar9.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdeonafXdZJq0ix7M2-nnLH8JNPihc97LciMfVedK5iMeHF-ZEYZFNkhrF6cve7iHETtwjyM-REHsEw28oME9vfmF9GrTcwkVRW99MLlOjcEgGMmFrJnqkUt-nYYO83I-FB1sgOovC5FQp/s320/cougar9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550570270380284866" /></a><br /> The 7th grade Boys’ team took on Reed Middle School in Basketball yesterday. The B team came out firing on all cylinders with Noah Tews leading the team with four offensive and four defensive rebounds while Shamar Redix and Nicholas Cole each had three. Darnell Parker led the team with four steals and his teammates Andrew Langley, Coltin Smith, and Jordan Bollenbach combined to shut down the Reed big men inside. Carver held Reed scoreless for the first half with score at 20-0. The Reed Beavers picked up their defense in the second half but were outmatched by Carver behind the hustle of Shannon Ryan and Elvis Edwards and the Cougars won the game 31-12. Chavez Nguyen and Shamar Redix led the team with six points each and Shannon Ryan had five.<br /> The A team came out wanting to send a message that they would not be outhustled- the message was received loud and clear. Altis Merrick, Seth Holyfield, Thomas Niekie, and Nathan Townsen out maneuvered, out scrapped, out jumped, and out anything else in took to get the ball away from the much bigger Read Beavers. Each of those players had four steals during the game as well as key rebounds to keep their team moving at break neck speed down the floor to score at the other end. Michael Fowler and Hayden Schmitz led the team in defensive rebounds and played the Reed big men very well. Once again Nicholas Cole and Coltin Smith came in to help the team get to a 35-17 third quarter lead with the B team coming in to finish the game 40-29. <br /> The Cougars have a huge home game Wednesday against the Pershing Generals<br /><br /> B team stats<br />Bollenbach 3 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound<br />Cole 2 pts., 3 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound<br />Edwards 2 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal<br />Langley 2 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound, 2 steals<br />Nguyen 6 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 1 steal<br />Parker 1 offensive rebound, 1 defensive rebound, 4 steals<br />Redix 6 pts., 3 offensive rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal<br />Ryan 6 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 2 assists, 2 defensive rebounds, 1 steal<br />Smith 3 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound<br />Tews 2 pts., 4 offensive rebounds, 4 defensive reobunds, 1 steal<br /> A team atats<br />Altis 4 pts., 4 steals, 4 offensive rebounds, 2 assists<br />Cole 1 offensive rebound<br />Fowler 3 pts., 3 defensive rebounds, 2 offensive rebounds, 1 assist<br />Holyfield 2 pts.,2 defensive rebounds, 4 steals, 3 offensive rebounds, 2 assists<br />Schmitz 4 pts., 3 defensive rebounds, 2 steals, 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists<br />Smith 1 defensive rebound, 1 offensive rebound<br />Thomas 9 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 4 steals, 1 offensive rebound, 5 assists<br />Townsen 18 pts., 1 defensive rebound, 4 steals, 2 offensive rebounds, 5 assistsCoach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-13631274036126805702010-12-08T17:01:00.000-08:002010-12-16T13:43:11.926-08:00Game 6 vs. Cherokee<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2kTjp_yOFRJV03KsuXsB56hKEpNNfTIdKGDnhbjHpbszq95U7_xFTklHXoZfTWgve4Xy6Z9m7SBmsOtThXyajw5GBgglc_lPeVFOxpGCxTvVV9vT-iui14G_uUsP-w99QlhJpNfPi6OmL/s1600/cougar1010.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2kTjp_yOFRJV03KsuXsB56hKEpNNfTIdKGDnhbjHpbszq95U7_xFTklHXoZfTWgve4Xy6Z9m7SBmsOtThXyajw5GBgglc_lPeVFOxpGCxTvVV9vT-iui14G_uUsP-w99QlhJpNfPi6OmL/s320/cougar1010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548481748195513666" /></a><br /> The 7th grade Boys’ Basketball team hosted the Cherokee Indians in a packed house yesterday afternoon. The B team played tough throughout the game behind great defensive play from Darnell Parker, Noah Tews, and Andrew Langley. The Cougars were able to continue to keep within eight to ten points of the Indians in larger part to Chaviz Nguyen Elvis Edwards and Jordan Bollenbach making the offense work. Shannon Ryan pulled in four offensive rebounds while Darnell Parker led the team with four points. Despite a valiant effort the Cougars were overpowered and lost 44-28<br /> The Carver A team was intent on beating Cherokee for a second time this season by hustling on defense while Cherokee had their own agenda as well and were hoping to upset the Cougars at home. The Indians jumped on the Cougars early and established a 26-12 lead in the first half. Carver was trying to play tough defense but found themselves with Michael Fowler and Seth Holyfield in foul trouble. Coltin Smith and Nicholas Cole stepped up and played significant minutes while trying to help their team get back in the game. The Cougars struggled to get into an offensive rhythm all night despite working hard to make things happen. Niekie Thomas was able to score eleven points, Nathan Townsen had nine, and Hayden Schmitz eight. The fourth quarter saw the Cougars outscore the Indians 15-9 even with all the fouling to get the ball back but in the end it was not enough and the team fell to Cherokee 47-36. It was a tough loss but the Cougars are a resilient team and plan on bouncing back against Reed next Monday.<br /> B team stats<br />Bollenbach 4 pts.<br />Cole 4 pts.<br />Edwards 2 pts., 1 defensive rebound, 1 offensive rebound, 1 steal<br />Langley 1 pt., 2 defensive rebounds, 3 offensive rebounds <br />Nguyen 5 pts.<br />Parker 4 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 4 steals <br />Redix 3 pts., 1 offensive rebound<br />Ryan 3 pts., 4 offensive rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal<br />Smith 1 offensive rebound <br />Tews 2 pts., 1 steal<br /> A team stats<br />Altis 2 pts., 1 defensive rebound, 2 steals<br />Cole 2 pts., 1 defensive rebounds<br />Fowler 1 defensive rebound<br />Holyfield 1 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound<br />Schmitz 8 pts.,2 defensive rebounds, 2 steals<br />Smith 2 pts., 1 offensive rebound<br />Thomas 11 pts., 1 assist, 3 defensive rebounds, 2 steals<br />Townsen 9 pts., 2 defenisve rebounds, 1 stealCoach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-23726409192038014372010-12-07T08:13:00.000-08:002010-12-09T14:08:07.505-08:00Game 5 vs. Study<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcqCir49usgbXDFO7xH2LzDAg6_VzXns1wysmTaqp6yrzRIKFULhzcVy0zFqyc61UKfP1bkONkPgkqPWSJigG8nARRzZAwHhSwMsrOeZwUbcWDFTT8LDhmU-rDBJ2mUXrKaXIRVYUMxGmU/s1600/cougar-820.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 244px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcqCir49usgbXDFO7xH2LzDAg6_VzXns1wysmTaqp6yrzRIKFULhzcVy0zFqyc61UKfP1bkONkPgkqPWSJigG8nARRzZAwHhSwMsrOeZwUbcWDFTT8LDhmU-rDBJ2mUXrKaXIRVYUMxGmU/s320/cougar-820.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547974613480326994" /></a><br /> The 7th grade Cougars traveled to the Stars in search of victory yesterday. The B game was scheduled to be just two quarters and the Cougars found it difficult to get going in the first. The B game started out with both teams playing good defense leading to the low score at half-time of 8-5 with Carver in the lead. The third and fourth quarters were much more exciting if you were a cougar fan with Carver scoring a combined twenty-nine points and playing top level team defense. Nicholas Cole led the team with seven points while Coltin Smith and Shannon Ryan both had six. Chaviz Nguyen and Elvis Edwards did a great job running the offense while Darnell Parker, Shamar Redix, Noah Tews , and Andrew Langley helped hold Pipkin to their low score in the 37-18 Carver win. <br /> The A team Cougars came out hungry and it showed with their stifling defense and hot shooting leading to an early 17-5 lead. Pipkin played tough and tried to get the ball to their big man inside but Michael Fowler and Hayden Schmitz denied him easy access to any points. On offense the team was hitting on all cylinders with outside shooting from Fowler and fast breaks that led to inside drives from Nathan Townsen and Niekie Thomas that paved the way to the 35-8 half-time lead. In the second half as in the first Merrick Altis was instrumental to the team defense with his quick hands while teammate Seth Holyfield was all over the place and at one point denied the Pirates biggest player from going to the basket. The B team came out ready to play with great hustle from Shamar Redix and Chavis Nguyen. Jordan Bollenbach had his team on the track and led the cougars with three assists while Colton Smith poured in seven points. Carver entered the second half down by one and played tough defense while getting eleven steals and pulling in nineteen defensive rebounds. In the end it was not enough as the Cougars fell to the Generals 30-25. <br /> The A game was a very physical game from the start with both teams playing in your face defense. The tempo was fast and furious and the first half ended with Carver leading 25-23. Carver outworked the Generals in the third quarter with Hayden Schmitz, Seth Holyfield and Michael Fowler getting some key rebounds. Niekie Thomas who had done a great job orchestrating the offense and playing tight defense got in foul trouble and rested for the remainder of the third. Nick Cole, Colton Smith, Nathan Townsen and Chaviz Nguyen all came in off the bench to contribute to the team. The fourth quarter proved to be too much defense from the Generals as the Cougars were only able to score three points and despite great team defense until the final minute when the Cougars had to foul to try to get the ball back Carver lost the game 47-38.<br /> The Cougars will be taking on the Pipkin Pirates on December 1st at Carver.<br />B Game Stats<br />Bollenbach 6 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 3 steals, 1 offensive rebound, 3 assists<br />Cole 2 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist<br />Edwards 2 defensive rebounds, 3 steals, 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist<br />Langley 2 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, 2 offensive rebounds, 1 assist<br />Nguyen 2 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 2 steals, 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist<br />Redix 3 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, 1 offensive rebound<br />Ryan 3 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 2 offensive rebounds<br />Smith 7 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 1 offensive rebounds<br />Tews 5 pts., 2 defensive rebounds, 3 offensive rebounds<br />A Game Stats<br />Altis 4 pts., 4 offensive rebounds, 1 defensive rebound, 2 steals<br />Cole 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal<br />Fowler 2 pts., 2 offensive rebounds, 3 assists, 4 defensive rebounds<br />Holyfield 2 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists, 4 defesive rebounds, 3 steals<br />Schmitz 7 pts., 5 offensive rebounds, 2 assists, 4 defensive rebounds, 2 steals<br />Thomas 9 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist, 4 defensive rebounds, 1 steal<br />Townsen 14 pts., 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists, 3 defensive rebound, 2 stealsCoach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-53824191308761269002010-11-17T10:50:00.000-08:002010-11-19T03:55:25.165-08:00Game 1 vs. Cherokee<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHdS3gUOU5jBAumMWHftIetq6FsAf0OUo-Cl6Vg_1vulxrpmctXLoS2IxkxeSQ5gSeBGPSMgRm3CtjvQ1HPioLF8h65R-GNxZUFKS0uiEhjpNUlDIvv-Y5BSbFHkEFOYxkIYcwpoS94Lt/s1600/Cougar7rev.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540595561965970802" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHdS3gUOU5jBAumMWHftIetq6FsAf0OUo-Cl6Vg_1vulxrpmctXLoS2IxkxeSQ5gSeBGPSMgRm3CtjvQ1HPioLF8h65R-GNxZUFKS0uiEhjpNUlDIvv-Y5BSbFHkEFOYxkIYcwpoS94Lt/s320/Cougar7rev.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>The 7th Grade Boys Basketball team got their season underway yesterday when they travelled south to play the Cherokee Indians. The B- team found out early why Cherokee is always considered a tough opponent. Both teams came out strong in the first quarter and the Cougars were only down 10-6. The Cougars were not able to handle the defensive pressure in the second half and wound up losing the game 38-21. Darnell Parker and Shamar Redix led the team with defensive rebounds and Jordan Bollenbach led the team on offense with seven points.<br />The A game felt like a playoff game from the very beginning with the raucous crowd and two teams ready to do battle. Carver came out strong and took an early 9-2 lead only to see Cherokee come back and go up 12-9. That was how the entire game was played- Carver would take a 17-14 lead into halftime and a 31-26 lead going into the final quarter. Michael Fowler and Hayden Schmitz were given the task of stopping the Indians six foot three center and they were up for the task limiting the impact the big man had on the game. The Cougars had hustled the entire game and were determined to return home with a victory. It was an intense final three minutes of the game with Carver taking everything Cherokee threw at them. With great team hustle from Niekie Thomas, Merrick Altis, and Seth Holyfied and some creative scoring by Nathan Townsen the Cougars were able to hold on to win 42-41. The offense was led by Nathan Townsen with 15 points, Niekie Thomas with 13, and Hayden Schmitz with 11. </div><div>B Game Stats</div><div>Bollenback 7 pts, 3 steals</div><div>Cole 3 offensive rebounds, 3 defensive rebounds, 1 steal</div><div>Edwards 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists, 1 defensive rebounds, 2 steals </div><div>Nguyen 4 pts, 1 defensive rebound, 2 steals </div><div>Parker 4 pts, 3 offensive rebounds, 4 defensive rebounds, 1 steal</div><div>Redix 4 pts, 1 offensive rebound, 4 defensive rebounds</div><div>Ryan 1 offensive rebound, 1 assists, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal </div><div>Smith 2 pts, 1 offensive rebound, 1 steal</div><div>A Team Stats</div><div>Altis 1 defensive rebound, 2 steals, 5 offensive rebounds,2 assists</div><div>Fowler 3 pts, 4 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists</div><div>Holyfield 1 pt, 2 steals, 2 offensive rebounds, 1 assist</div><div>Schmitz 11 pts, 5 defensive rebounds,1 steal, 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist</div><div>Thomas 13 pts, 6 defensive rebounds, 2 steals, 3 offensive rebounds, 2 assists</div><div>Townsen 15 pts, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal , 2 offensive rebounds, 2 assists</div><div></div><div>Next up for the hungry Cougars is a game on Monday against the visiting Pershing Generals.</div><div></div><div></div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-21189425381867660372010-02-01T11:42:00.000-08:002010-02-01T12:19:43.238-08:00Tourney games 1 & 2 Reposted<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOoeFk6wuJUqv1z2KB2G0PisvBpCAsCxMMN7W8V0JKabcRm8AYqgtnagFMa5HnQWH1BrpHrxJpLAz0p0JY5sfQvW2QAEzXgAqZMiSXadlCduwU69Tft84aVEUf4OJINqb-QB5rPfhkq6JG/s1600-h/cougarc9.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433364429643859554" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 270px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 224px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOoeFk6wuJUqv1z2KB2G0PisvBpCAsCxMMN7W8V0JKabcRm8AYqgtnagFMa5HnQWH1BrpHrxJpLAz0p0JY5sfQvW2QAEzXgAqZMiSXadlCduwU69Tft84aVEUf4OJINqb-QB5rPfhkq6JG/s320/cougarc9.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>The 7th grade Cougars played the first and second round games of the city tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. The first game was against Hickory Hills at their new middle school. The Cougars were licking their chops at the opportunity of handing the Spartans a defeat in their first tournament game in their new gym. The game was a very physical contest with both teams picking up fouls throughout. The Spartans tried to press the Cougars like they had in the first meeting but did not have the same success. Carver through much practice was able to beat the press and found themselves down by only five at the half by a score of 13-8. The third quarter was not kind to the Cougars, who had several players in foul trouble, including Jake Brown. Jake had been doing a great job of rebounding but it seemed every time he leaned forward he picked up another foul. Carver was down 24-12 but as always they mustered a comeback, hitting some huge shots, including two treys from Kendrick Price and one from Brant Jones. Hunter Steinmetz and Jake Thompson were like thieves in the night, combining for a total of thirteen steals. Team defense and full-court pressure allowed Carver to push the game to the end but difficulty rebounding let the Spartans get away with the victory by a score of 37-30. Kendrick Price led all scorers with nine points, Hunter Steinmetz had eight, and Jake Thompson six. Isaiah Holyfield pulled in a team high four defensive rebounds. </div><div><br />The second round had the Cougars hosting the Jarrett Trojans. The game was going to be a tough one based on the first contest, which Carver won by a mere four points. The defense for both teams played aggressively and forced early turnovers. With a quick tempo the Cougars were able to keep pace and were down by only one at the half 23-22. Carver came out cold in the third quarter scoring only one point while Jarrett scored eleven. Rebounding was once again a difficult area for the Cougars who then were forced to play even harder on defense. Hunter Steinmetz, helped by the full court pressure defense of his teammates, was able to get away with seven steals and the Cougars were back in the game. Brant Jones and Noah Nease once again stepped in and played great team basketball while Ben Sandy and Jake Brown led team in with a combined seven offensive rebounds. Despite scoring an impressive fifteen points in the final quarter the season came to an end for the hard working Cougars with the 41-38 loss. Leading the team offensively was Hunter Steinmetz with twelve points, Kendrick Price with ten, and Jake Thompson with nine. </div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-22913362854629628342010-01-12T09:41:00.000-08:002010-01-12T11:30:43.905-08:00Game 8 vs Jarrett<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-_U-1Z3bst2BLIBao2L9w6mUDxkCkwl1YHDWIFwJM6G6J7cKcISxMysrfx0HtfLdap8TPlmlzPuYkM2zdYRePAc_zFvKxKvS3eABS-M8rxyTAMmmmVfda4RxKcXIyYBSaW9_NQ-IoTAH3/s1600-h/cougard3.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425937984173030818" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 212px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-_U-1Z3bst2BLIBao2L9w6mUDxkCkwl1YHDWIFwJM6G6J7cKcISxMysrfx0HtfLdap8TPlmlzPuYkM2zdYRePAc_zFvKxKvS3eABS-M8rxyTAMmmmVfda4RxKcXIyYBSaW9_NQ-IoTAH3/s320/cougard3.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>The 7th Grade Cougars played their final game of the regular season against Jarrett Middle School. The B team came out a little flat to start the game and their opponents took advantage. Jarrett was hitting everything they put up and jumped out to a 14-4 advantage at the end of the first half. Tory Hall made up for a slow start and came alive in the second half pulling in six offensive rebounds while Josh Beach grabbed four and Nayeem Choudhury three. Logan Werdeman played his best game of the season, hustling on every play and leading the team with five defensive rebounds. Cole Oliver led the team in assists as well as scoring a team high four points. Despite improved play from Hussain Rao, Noah Nease and Sam Stuckey and holding the Trojans scoreless in the fourth quarter the Cougars still lost the game 30-15.<br /><br />The A game was a very physical contest from the very beginning and the Cougars seemed to be up for the challenge. Both teams were trying to set the tone of the game by out hustling the other. Jarrett had an early advantage at the end of the first quarter with a 10-7 lead. Ben Sandy was a beast at both ends of the floor pulling in a team high five defensive rebounds and accounting for three steals and four blocked shots. The leading burglar for the Cougars was Hunter Steinmetz, whose relentless effort got him five steals off of several Jarrett players. Isaiah Holyfield had recovered from an earlier knock to the floor and was key in his team’s belief they could win. The Cougars had clawed their way through the second and third quarters and found themselves up 38-35. The fourth quarter was just as physical as the first three in this game that was proving to be an epic battle between two determined teams. Jake Brown had played exceptional basketball and continued to provide a rebounding spark for his Cougar teammates, grabbing a team high five defensive rebounds. Brant Jones was put in the game to try to take on Jarrett's best and most physical player and he did a fantastic job, especially when teammate Ben Sandy fouled out of the game. Jake Thompson, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, once again helped his team survive a late push by Jarrett and the Cougars were able to come away with a 46-42 victory. Kendrick Price was an unstoppable force on offense, not only leading his team with eighteen points, but hitting several crucial shots during the game when his team needed them the most. Ben Sandy scored ten points while Hunter Steinmetz had six.<br />The Cougars next game will be on 1/20/10. Opponent and game site will be announced. </div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-62973763601718792422009-12-22T09:37:00.000-08:002009-12-22T12:23:42.222-08:00Cougar Basketball Game 7 vs. Pleasant View<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigolglef9niCrNkEUSW1bhP36xtHSm7loFP1cnESwfeN6dXfT5c12JbvXq29zGb3WRczFr_b8Ty_hKTxyVIM9MupUCfrSaaTyFKCd8oq0l4uAs0iiCdiU0ceeUoWXtT1TxtGBfShY1zM6A/s1600-h/CougarVal.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418158812395571810" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 255px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigolglef9niCrNkEUSW1bhP36xtHSm7loFP1cnESwfeN6dXfT5c12JbvXq29zGb3WRczFr_b8Ty_hKTxyVIM9MupUCfrSaaTyFKCd8oq0l4uAs0iiCdiU0ceeUoWXtT1TxtGBfShY1zM6A/s320/CougarVal.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>The Pleasant View Blue Jays flew into Carver yesterday to take on your 7th grade team. The B game was very exciting with back and forth action on offense for the first half. Carver was impressive in running their plays correctly and leading at the end of the first quarter 8-7 and then at the half 14-13. The game showed that P.V. was a good team but Carver had worked on defensive positioning and rebounding the last few days and it paid off. Nayeem Choudhury, Tory Hall, Noah Neasen, and Brant Jones all had four defensive rebounds each while Hussain Rao, Cole Oliver and Josh Beach combined for eight steals. Noah Nease, Logan Werdeman and Tory Hall pulled in fourteen offensive rebounds allowing Carver to pull ahead by ten at the end of the third and for a win with the final score of 33-28. Noah Nease led the team with thirteen points, Brant Jones had eight and Cole Oliver six.</div><br /><br /><div>The A team wanted to come out and control the game from the start but found the Blue Jay team to be very quick and focused as well. With some great team defense Carver clawed their way back into the game and the score at halftime showed a five point deficit at 18-13. Isaiah Holyfield worked hard on both ends of the court pulling in eight total rebounds while Kendrick Price grabbed five and Ben Sandy four. Hunter Steinmetz, Jake Thompson, and Jake Brown powered the offense to keep within five at the end of the third with eleven, nine and six points respectively. The B team had played a great game against Reed on Monday and wanted to continue the trend in this game. The first few minutes started with the Cougars really doing a good job against the Generals and holding their own. The second half of the first quarter and the second quarter had the B team struggling to get the ball in basket despite running the plays correctly and Carver had only nine points at the half. Despite scoring twenty-one points in the second half the Cougars could not stop Pershing from scoring and lost the game 48-28. Leading the team with four defensive rebounds was Logan Werdeman. Offensive leaders were Cole Oliver with nine points and Noah Nease who scored six by hitting two three-pointers.<br /><br />The A team came out strong in the first by playing tough defense and scoring quickly. Midway through the first the Cougars were only down two and at the end of the quarter the score was 13-7 in favor of the Generals. Ben Sandy played a strong inside game on both offense and defense to lead the team with twelve points and six defensive rebounds. The B team came out firing on all cylinders thanks to great team defense led by Brant Jones’s team high four steals and the combination of Tory Hall and Sam Stuckey who combined for seven defensive rebounds. Noah Nease and Cole Oliver were like money in the bank for the Cougars- depositing bucket after bucket and scoring twelve and fifteen points respectively. With Carver leading 33-2 at the half the team slowed the tempo down in the second half to take time off the clock- Josh Beach and Hussain Rao did a great job of reversing the ball up top and then feeding it to the awaiting hands of Logan Werdeman and Nayeem Choudhury. At one point the cougars ate up nearly two minutes off the clock on one possession and cruised to a42-6 victory.<br /><br />The A team came out strong against the Reed Beavers and it was a great first half for both teams. Trading points back and forth was the theme in the first half- proven by the 13-13 tie at the end of the first quarter and the 29-25 lead held by Reed at the half. Several Cougars had picked up fouls in the physical play of the first half and that would prove to be a difficult problem to get around. The Beavers came out strong in the third and were determined to build up an early lead. Three Carver starters including Hunter Steinmetz, Jake Brown, and Ben Sandy had to spend time on the bench due to foul trouble and the Cougars fell behind 46-34 at the end of the third. The Cougars showed true grit and clawed their way back to within seven points before the Beavers were able to pad their lead back up to ten sending Carver home with a 52-42 loss. Hunter Steinmetz scored five three pointers in the game and led the team with twenty-one points and Kendrick Price added fifteen. Price, Ben Sandy, Stephen Smith, and Isaiah Holyfield combined for an impressive eighteen defensive rebounds.<br /><br />The Cougars will be playing at home against the Pershing Generals this Wednesday. The B team had been working hard to prepare for Cherokee and it showed in the first quarter when the Cougars played tough and held the Indians to just five first quarter points. The second quarter found Cherokee starting to click and pull away from Carver for a 16-4 half-timelead. Josh Beach and Hussain Rao helped defend at the top of key while Nayeem Choudhury, Logan Werdeman and Sam Stuckey dealt with the inside game. Despite a very solid effort from Tory Hall, who pulled in a team high six defensive rebounds, and Naoh Nease along with Cole Oliver who combined for ten steals Carver could not keep pace with Cherokee and lost the game 31-14.<br />Noah Nease was the leading scorer with eleven points and Brant Jones had four assists.</div><br /><div>The A team was excited to step on the floor in front of the biggest crowd of students to attend a basketball at Carver in years. Perhaps it was the excitement of the game that had the team unfocused and led to several turnovers early in the game. The tempo was very fast and the game was quite physical as Cherokee's big men played there way inside and were able to get several Cougars in foul trouble. Not able to generate much offense Carver found themselves down 30-7 at the half. Carver was determined to work their way back and actually outscored the Indians in the third quarter as Hunter Steinmetz hit a three and Jake Thompson added two more. Ben Sandy, Stephen Smith, and Isaiah Holyfield had their work cut out for them as Cherokee forced their way to the basket and once again the Indians began to pull away. Despite Hunter Steinmetz's turbo speed defense and hard work from both Jake Brown and Brant Jones the Cougars were unable to slow Cherokee down in the 49-22 loss. Jake Thompson led all scorers with nine points and Kendrick Price had seven. The B team came out ready to make up for their slow start in their last game. They did! Solid defense was led by Sam Stuckey and Brant Jones in the first along with Noah Nease grabbing a team high 4 steals and Josh Beach with three defensive rebounds. This forced the Stars to play the style of game the Cougars love- fast and furious. Carver was able to pull away in the second half behind an aggressive offense and sharp shooting.<br />Leading the team on offense was Cole Oliver with five points.<br />Hussain Rao and Logan Werdeman were instrumental in pushing the B team cougars past the Stars by a final score of 27-18. .<br />The A team stepped out on the floor not wanting to be outdone by their teammates. Study’s post players started out the game very physical and Carver was ready to answer with a combination of Ben Sandy, Isaiah Holyfield, Kendrick Price, and foul collecting Stephen “let me stand here” Smith. Carver shot the Stars out of the game running their offensive plays with precision and solid shooting. The Stars were reluctant to go down without a fight and came away with several steals during the second half- only to see Carver retaliate with steals of their own. Defensive leaders were Ben Sandy and Kendrick Price with a combined seven defensive rebounds and Hunter Steinmetz and Jake Thompson with a team high three steals each. Leading the Cougars to the 35-4 victory were Jake Thompson with 12points, and Ben Sandy with six.<br />The 7th grade Cougars will play the Cherokee Indians on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. - the games will be free for any students who wish to attend-so please lets pack the gym and show who has the best fans in the city!</div></div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-33866433193400640822009-12-07T09:38:00.000-08:002009-12-07T09:55:41.173-08:00Cougar Basketball Game 2 vs Hickory Hills<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Re4MgUmQiRa75a8Z0Tm5JK939zn0K89tAYhj8Usureh14bNCwQkM7_fzp_2ukfuJDmnqyLTPQ8boZYcagMBMUKfQtWX2R6hJ3CJ6ScBEOW9EDJkVsazk9LhILPARvnU5zLaGsSqzVglh/s1600-h/Cougar6.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412552176803041890" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 223px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 228px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Re4MgUmQiRa75a8Z0Tm5JK939zn0K89tAYhj8Usureh14bNCwQkM7_fzp_2ukfuJDmnqyLTPQ8boZYcagMBMUKfQtWX2R6hJ3CJ6ScBEOW9EDJkVsazk9LhILPARvnU5zLaGsSqzVglh/s320/Cougar6.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><div><div>The 7th Grade Boy’s Basketball team faced the Hickory Hills Spartans in basketball action on Saturday. Both the A and B teams started out slow against their aggressive opponents and both team pushed hard in the second half but came away with different results. </div><div>After falling behind by eight the B team Cougars fought back with a great team defensive effort led by Cole Oliver and Noah Nease to claim a decisive 25-16 victory. Nayeem Choudhury led the team with six points while Noah Nease and Brant Jones had four steals each.<br />The A team had trouble finding the basket early in the game and did not keep pace with Spartans for almost three quarters. Finally at the end of the third with their team down by twenty points the Cougars came to life. Stifling defense from Jake Brown, Brant Jones, and Jake Thompson along with hot shooting got the Cougars back in the game with a chance to win in the final minute. Despite the great effort in the fourth the Cougars lost the game by one point- 38-37. Hunter Steinmetz led all scorers with sixteen points and Kendrick Price had nine.<br />Next up for the Cougars are the Study Stars this afternoon. </div></div></div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4118632033676713899.post-82554191578896329912009-12-03T08:10:00.000-08:002010-02-01T12:06:45.318-08:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcabHDThSl8C8Uaa-_SegfyXYnbDVZi2-bb8ijtusxJDZ-UB1rzkZIuIW7oQTTBL4Y7vdyXLfZ4HhXLuJXjAgMzkhU3-LyakUNBtT0yy90pK2uKdWkRheVLZruKi3cQYEDGIsBkwlJ_qVr/s1600-h/cougarbest.gif"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411043238920291682" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 213px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcabHDThSl8C8Uaa-_SegfyXYnbDVZi2-bb8ijtusxJDZ-UB1rzkZIuIW7oQTTBL4Y7vdyXLfZ4HhXLuJXjAgMzkhU3-LyakUNBtT0yy90pK2uKdWkRheVLZruKi3cQYEDGIsBkwlJ_qVr/s320/cougarbest.gif" border="0" /></a> Cougar Basketball Game 1 vs Pipkin<br /><br />The 7th Grade Boy’s Basketball team finally got the regular season under way against the Pipkin Pirates yesterday. The B team Cougars found themselves in difficult waters from the beginning of the game to the end. The Pirates came out strong and surprised the Cougars to take an early 8-4 lead. By the end of the second quarter both Cole Oliver and Brant Jones had scored 4 points each unfortunately the Cougars sluggish offense could not keep pace with Pipkin’s 18 points. The third was not much better offensively but defensive effort improved with hustle from Tory Hall, Nayeem Choudhury and Sam Stuckey. The start of the 4th quarter is when the Cougars finally came out to play- outgunning the Pirates 15-4 and actually stealing the lead a few teams. Cole Oliver scored six of his team high ten points and Noah Nease scored five of his seven points. Despite the improved effort the Cougars were not able to close out the game and fell to the Pirates 31-29. Cole Oliver led the team with eight steals while Nayeem Choudhury and Tory Hall had three apiece.<br />The A game started out intense on defense from both teams. Points were like buried treasure in the early going with the score tied at three apiece at the 3 minute mark. Isaiah Holyfield had two great blocks, Stephen Smith and Kendrick Price were key in not letting the Pirates drive to the basket. The pace picked up on offense despite good pressure defense from both teams and the Pirates found themselves with a 23-22 lead at the half. The second half was like a classic battle at sea with both teams demonstrating great firepower, the Pirates hit three 3-pointers only to be answered by three from the Cougars- one each from Jake Brown, Brant Jones, and Hunter Steinmetz. Defense and solid shooting was the key for Carver as they went down to the wire, needing Jake Thompson to hit two crucial free throws and then an incredible effort to stop Pipkin from scoring with 2.2 seconds left. Hunter Steinmetz led the team with seven steals. Top scorers were Jake Thompson with 13 points, Hunter Steinmetz with 12, and Ben Sandy with 10.<br />Next up for the 7th grade Cougars is an away game at Hickory Hills on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.<br /><br /><div></div>Coach Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793646412612981861noreply@blogger.com1
