Game 1 vs. Cherokee

The 7th Grade Boys Basketball team got their season underway yesterday when they travelled south to play the Cherokee Indians. The B- team found out early why Cherokee is always considered a tough opponent. Both teams came out strong in the first quarter and the Cougars were only down 10-6. The Cougars were not able to handle the defensive pressure in the second half and wound up losing the game 38-21. Darnell Parker and Shamar Redix led the team with defensive rebounds and Jordan Bollenbach led the team on offense with seven points.
The A game felt like a playoff game from the very beginning with the raucous crowd and two teams ready to do battle. Carver came out strong and took an early 9-2 lead only to see Cherokee come back and go up 12-9. That was how the entire game was played- Carver would take a 17-14 lead into halftime and a 31-26 lead going into the final quarter. Michael Fowler and Hayden Schmitz were given the task of stopping the Indians six foot three center and they were up for the task limiting the impact the big man had on the game. The Cougars had hustled the entire game and were determined to return home with a victory. It was an intense final three minutes of the game with Carver taking everything Cherokee threw at them. With great team hustle from Niekie Thomas, Merrick Altis, and Seth Holyfied and some creative scoring by Nathan Townsen the Cougars were able to hold on to win 42-41. The offense was led by Nathan Townsen with 15 points, Niekie Thomas with 13, and Hayden Schmitz with 11.
