Game 8 vs. Pershing

The 7th Grade Boys took on the Pershing Generals in Basketball action yesterday and there was more drama in two games then in all of the Shakespeare plays combined. The B team defense jumped on Pershing from the get go and with Darnell Parker and Chaviz Nguyen combining for six steals the Cougars were up 12-5 at the half. Jordan Bollenbach and Darnell Parker led the team with six offensive rebounds each while Andrew Langley had three assists. The Generals came out strong in the third and took a 21-15 lead and from then on it was a great battle with every Cougar grabbing at least one rebound in an effort to get back in front. Despite great team effort from Elvis Edwards, Shannon Ryan and Shamar Redix and incredible defensive effort from Noah Tews Carver just could not make up the points and fell 33-27. Coltin Smith and Jordan Bollenbach were leading scorers for the Cougars.
The stage was set for a great performance from the A teams of both schools. Game 6 vs. Cherokee

The 7th grade Boys’ Basketball team hosted the Cherokee Indians in a packed house yesterday afternoon. The B team played tough throughout the game behind great defensive play from Darnell Parker, Noah Tews, and Andrew Langley. The Cougars were able to continue to keep within eight to ten points of the Indians in larger part to Chaviz Nguyen Elvis Edwards and Jordan Bollenbach making the offense work. Shannon Ryan pulled in four offensive rebounds while Darnell Parker led the team with four points. Despite a valiant effort the Cougars were overpowered and lost 44-28
The Carver A team was intent on beating Cherokee for a second time this season by hustling on defense while Cherokee had their own agenda as well and were hoping to upset the Cougars at home. The Indians jumped on the Cougars early and established a 26-12 lead in the first half. Carver was trying to play tough defense but found themselves with Michael Fowler and Seth Holyfield in foul trouble. The 7th grade Boys hosted Pipkin Middle School in basketball action yesterday. The B game started out with both teams playing good defense leading to the low score at half-time of 8-5 with Carver in the lead. The third and fourth quarters were much more exciting if you were a cougar fan with Carver scoring a combined twenty-nine points and playing top level team defense. Chaviz Nguyen and Elvis Edwards did a great job running the offense while Darnell Parker, Shamar Redix, Noah Tews , and Andrew Langley helped hold Pipkin to their low score in the 37-18 Carver win.
The A team Cougars came out hungry and it showed with their stifling defense and hot shooting leading to an early 17-5 lead. On offense the team was hitting on all cylinders with outside shooting from Fowler and fast breaks that led to inside drives from Nathan Townsen and Niekie Thomas that paved the way to the 35-8 half-time lead. The Cougars were not able to handle the defensive pressure in the second half and wound up losing the game 38-21. Darnell Parker and Shamar Redix led the team with defensive rebounds and Jordan Bollenbach led the team on offense with seven points.
The A game felt like a playoff game from the very beginning with the raucous crowd and two teams ready to do battle. Tourney games 1 & 2 Reposted

The 7th grade Cougars played the first and second round games of the city tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. The first game was against Hickory Hills at their new middle school. The Cougars were licking their chops at the opportunity of handing the Spartans a defeat in their first tournament game in their new gym. The game was a very physical contest with both teams picking up fouls throughout. The Spartans tried to press the Cougars like they had in the first meeting but did not have the same success. Carver through much practice was able to beat the press and found themselves down by only five at the half by a score of 13-8. The third quarter was not kind to the Cougars, who had several players in foul trouble, including Jake Brown. Jake had been doing a great job of rebounding but it seemed every time he leaned forward he picked up another foul. Carver was down 24-12 but as always they mustered a comeback, hitting some huge shots, including two treys from Kendrick Price and one from Brant Jones. Hunter Steinmetz and Jake Thompson were like thieves in the night, combining for a total of thirteen steals. Team defense and full-court pressure allowed Carver to push the game to the end but difficulty rebounding let the Spartans get away with the victory by a score of 37-30. Kendrick Price led all scorers with nine points, Hunter Steinmetz had eight, and Jake Thompson six. Isaiah Holyfield pulled in a team high four defensive rebounds.

The second round had the Cougars hosting the Jarrett Trojans. The game was going to be a tough one based on the first contest, which Carver won by a mere four points. The defense for both teams played aggressively and forced early turnovers. With a quick tempo the Cougars were able to keep pace and were down by only one at the half 23-22. Carver came out cold in the third quarter scoring only one point while Jarrett scored eleven. Rebounding was once again a difficult area for the Cougars who then were forced to play even harder on defense. Hunter Steinmetz, helped by the full court pressure defense of his teammates, was able to get away with seven steals and the Cougars were back in the game. Brant Jones and Noah Nease once again stepped in and played great team basketball while Ben Sandy and Jake Brown led team in with a combined seven offensive rebounds. Despite scoring an impressive fifteen points in the final quarter the season came to an end for the hard working Cougars with the 41-38 loss. Leading the team offensively was Hunter Steinmetz with twelve points, Kendrick Price with ten, and Jake Thompson with nine.

Game 8 vs Jarrett

The 7th Grade Cougars played their final game of the regular season against Jarrett Middle School. The B team came out a little flat to start the game and their opponents took advantage. Jarrett was hitting everything they put up and jumped out to a 14-4 advantage at the end of the first half. Tory Hall made up for a slow start and came alive in the second half pulling in six offensive rebounds while Josh Beach grabbed four and Nayeem Choudhury three. Logan Werdeman played his best game of the season, hustling on every play and leading the team with five defensive rebounds. Cole Oliver led the team in assists as well as scoring a team high four points. Despite improved play from Hussain Rao, Noah Nease and Sam Stuckey and holding the Trojans scoreless in the fourth quarter the Cougars still lost the game 30-15.

The A game was a very physical contest from the very beginning and the Cougars seemed to be up for the challenge. Both teams were trying to set the tone of the game by out hustling the other. Jarrett had an early advantage at the end of the first quarter with a 10-7 lead. Ben Sandy was a beast at both ends of the floor pulling in a team high five defensive rebounds and accounting for three steals and four blocked shots. The leading burglar for the Cougars was Hunter Steinmetz, whose relentless effort got him five steals off of several Jarrett players. Isaiah Holyfield had recovered from an earlier knock to the floor and was key in his team’s belief they could win. The Cougars had clawed their way through the second and third quarters and found themselves up 38-35. The fourth quarter was just as physical as the first three in this game that was proving to be an epic battle between two determined teams. Jake Brown had played exceptional basketball and continued to provide a rebounding spark for his Cougar teammates, grabbing a team high five defensive rebounds. Brant Jones was put in the game to try to take on Jarrett's best and most physical player and he did a fantastic job, especially when teammate Ben Sandy fouled out of the game. Jake Thompson, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, once again helped his team survive a late push by Jarrett and the Cougars were able to come away with a 46-42 victory. Kendrick Price was an unstoppable force on offense, not only leading his team with eighteen points, but hitting several crucial shots during the game when his team needed them the most. Ben Sandy scored ten points while Hunter Steinmetz had six.
The Cougars next game will be on 1/20/10. Opponent and game site will be announced.
