Game 8 vs. Pershing

The 7th Grade Boys took on the Pershing Generals in Basketball action yesterday and there was more drama in two games then in all of the Shakespeare plays combined. The B team defense jumped on Pershing from the get go and with Darnell Parker and Chaviz Nguyen combining for six steals the Cougars were up 12-5 at the half. Jordan Bollenbach and Darnell Parker led the team with six offensive rebounds each while Andrew Langley had three assists. The Generals came out strong in the third and took a 21-15 lead and from then on it was a great battle with every Cougar grabbing at least one rebound in an effort to get back in front. Despite great team effort from Elvis Edwards, Shannon Ryan and Shamar Redix and incredible defensive effort from Noah Tews Carver just could not make up the points and fell 33-27. Coltin Smith and Jordan Bollenbach were leading scorers for the Cougars.
The stage was set for a great performance from the A teams of both schools. Carver was determined to avenge an earlier loss to Pershing and it showed with the effort in the first half by Michael Fowler who wound up pulling in eight defensive rebounds and Merrick Altis who had four. The Cougars were down 10-7 at the end of the first quarter but pulled even at the half 17-17 with great effort from the entire team. The third quarter was very intense when Coltin Smith came in and played incredible defense on the Pershing big men while Nathan Townsen, Seth Holyfield and Niekie Thomas contained the other players outside. The game was tied 33-33 when Hayden Schmitz was fouled with 1.6 seconds left. With ice in his veins Hayden drained all three to give Carver a three point lead and after Pershing missed a free throw at the other end the Cougars were celebrating the 36-33 win.
